The Overqualified Carpet Guy:
How Jesus Hernandez is Building a Quality-First Empire
It was a Tuesday, and I found myself walking into Fat Cats for a random networking invite I had received the day prior from Mia Brooks at WaFd Bank. Mia told me it was a BNI group, and that the people there would be really good to meet. I researched the BNI organization the evening prior, but didn’t see anything on the website that really wowed me.
Walking into Fat Cats, I was greeted by the ticketman for the movie theatre section of the building. He could tell, by the way I was dressed, what I was there for. Before I could utter a word, he just smiled and pointed towards Theatre 1.
“What an interesting and odd situation I’ve got myself into,” I thought to myself as I entered.
When I got inside Theatre 1, there were business professionals scattered all around the stadium seating areas. Some were even standing in the entryway, as if they couldn’t even make it all the way inside without becoming engulfed in a networking conversation.
It was a good sign.
There were many other elements to this meeting that I intend to write about in a future article. For now, I’d like to focus on a man named Jesus Hernandez.
At one point during the meeting, the BNI chapter president announced a particularly interesting group recognition and directed our attention toward the silver screen. It was an award graphic celebrating Jesus for contributing several thousand dollars of referral business to other group members during the prior month.
That is what real networking actually looks like.
Later on in the meeting, Jesus stood up to give his 30-second elevator pitch, as we all did that day. As I listened to Jesus speak, I couldn’t help but notice how much he genuinely cared about helping others. His speech consisted mostly of expressing his gratitude to the group for referring new customers to him and his intention to continue helping others as well.
It was immediately obvious that this guy was the real deal.
Needless to say, I followed up with Jesus about a week later to get the rest of his entrepreneurial story for Start Magazine. I was not disappointed. And you won’t be either.
The Achilles Pivot
Jesus is drastically overqualified to run a local carpet cleaning franchise. He spent years building high-level operations in the commercial cleaning sector. He was a minority shareholder in Seattle Building Maintenance until they sold the company to a large facilities services group in 2017. He stayed on through the transition before moving his family to Arizona in 2021.
He took a role as a general manager for another commercial operation, but heavy corporate micromanagement quickly pushed him out.
“After moving to Arizona, I accepted a position as the General Manager for another commercial cleaning company. It was a great opportunity, but I quickly realized I missed the freedom of running a business. I had spent years making decisions, building teams, and leading with trust. Suddenly, I was being micromanaged while also being expected to micromanage others—and that’s never been my leadership style.” Jesus Hernandez
Jesus transitioned into real estate to find more freedom. Then, at the end of 2024, he tore his Achilles playing pickleball.
The severe injury required months of recovery. His real estate pipeline slowed to an absolute halt. He needed a reliable way to support his family of seven. In 2025, he took a massive leap and purchased Heaven’s Best NW Valley.

Retraining the Market
The carpet cleaning industry is notorious for terrible pricing gimmicks. Big companies run ads promising to clean three rooms and a hallway for a flat rate of $119. The goal is never to actually clean the house for that price. The goal is simply to get a technician through the front door. Once inside, they hit the homeowner with hidden fees and high-pressure upselling until that cheap special turns into a $400 invoice.
Jesus completely refuses to operate that way. He took over a local business in a market that had been trained to expect cheap, unsustainable jobs. He immediately raised the standard. He invested $30,000 into modern equipment right out of the gate.
He also strictly enforced professional IICRC certification standards. This mandates thorough pre-vacuuming before a single drop of water touches the floor, because 70 to 80 percent of the debris in carpet is insoluble dry soil.
INSIGHT
Consumer data shows that hidden fees and aggressive upselling are the leading causes of negative reviews in the home service industry. Businesses that implement flat-rate, transparent pricing often experience slower initial volume but boast drastically higher long-term customer retention and organic referral rates.
Retraining customers to value quality work is a brutal process. One homeowner initially told Jesus’s wife, Laura, that she was going to tell all her friends to avoid Heaven’s Best. She was angry about a $179 quote to clean her bedrooms, walk-in closets, and living room.
Laura calmly explained that they are a local family business providing an exceptional, transparent service. The customer eventually gave them a chance. When Jesus finished the job, the woman actually hugged him. She called it the best carpet cleaning she ever had and immediately paid for an extra protectant service before he left.
A Foundation of Faith
Jesus does not sit around waiting for the phone to ring. During slow seasons, he physically hits the streets. He knocks on doors around his current jobs and walks into local businesses to introduce himself. He embraces the rejection because he knows a single conversation can turn into a lifelong customer.
“We strive to put God first and treat every customer, neighbor, vendor, and employee the way we would want to be treated. That means being fair in our pricing, standing behind our work, and always trying to do the right thing, even when no one is watching.” – Jesus Hernandez
That deep care for the community extends far beyond dirty carpets. Jesus served as the President of the Rotary Club of Surprise and Sun City West from 2023 to 2024. He leads street cleanups and sponsors books for local children through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Laura recently finished a two-year term as President of Home Educators of Surprise while homeschooling their kids.
“Community service is important to us because we’ve been incredibly blessed, and we believe that when you’ve been given a lot, you should give back. My wife, Laura, and I have always tried to invest our time and talents into making our community a little better.” – Jesus Hernandez
By refusing to cut corners and strictly honoring his quoted prices, Jesus is building a highly profitable, sustainable operation. His deep corporate experience gave him the exact tools needed to disrupt a broken local market.
